This
hike starts out by walking through the Boy Scout Pueblo to the Geronimo
Trail that begins with a short, somewhat steep, little-used ascent to a
saddle overlooking a box canyon. We will descend into the
canyon
and continue up the trail climbing to meet the National Trail at the
Buena Vista Lookout. A short side trail has views of downtown
Phoenix. We will return to the entrance to the box canyon and
drop down into another canyon. This canyon contains a vast
number
of petroglyphs. Close to the end of the canyon, a short
bushwhack
gets us back to another trail that exits back into the Boy Scout
Pueblo. Los Dos Molino’s on Central Ave is an after hike
option.

We

360 that is the 4x4 road that is used to service the radios at the
1,890 ft peak. The trial is moderately steep and is quite
rocky,
good footwear is recommended. The trial climbs to the top
where
there are great 360-degree views of the entire Valley. After
we
regroup at the peak we will take Trail 360 down the other side and pass
the remains of the Cloud Nine restaurant. This restaurant was
an
elite restaurant that operated on the mountain; it burned down in the
early 60’s and was never rebuilt. Guests of the restaurant
where
shuttled to it in 4x4 vehicles and all the supplies and trash were
transported the same way.

Canyon
Creek is a great little spring creek up near Forest Lakes on the Rim,
lots of area to explore and stretch out. I plan to go up
early
and secure a spot to camp in the woods above the creek. We
will
camp, fly fish and do some Dutch oven cooking. There are also
some great little canyons to explore as well as bait fishing in other
parts of the creek. Anyone interested in going should keep in
touch so I can brief you on access to the area.

Pinal
Mountain is a "sky island" that rises abruptly from the desert floor
south of Globe. The elevationand north facing slopes combine to create
a surprisingly lush microenvironment with mixed confers, aspens and
Arizona Walnuts near the top of Signal Peak. Here in the 1880s General
Nelson Miles established a heliograph in the efforts against the
Apache. Our loop will desend using the Icehouse Canyon #198 and
Telephone #192 Trails, and return via the Six-shooter Canyon Trail

Four
Peaks, a well-known landmark in central Arizona forms the southern end
of the Mazatzal Mountains with its four rugged summits. While
the
actual summits require some technical climbing, the Four Peaks Trail
accesses the eastern slope of these peaks. The drive into the
trailhead is better accessed with a high-clearance vehicle but 4WD is
not needed. We will follow Four Peaks Trail to Amethyst
Trail. From Amethyst Trail, we will hike Browns
Saddle.
From this point we will take Browns Trail back to the
trailhead.

This
terrific loop hike will take us into and through the tall pines,
aspens and fern glens of the Mogollon Rim area. This hike
follows
the original trails constructed by both the forest service and local
pioneer ranchers in this area. These trails linked the network of
cabins used by the original forest rangers in the early 1900s, and
include the Barbershop, U Bar and Houston Brothers Trails. We
will depart the Valley sometime late on Friday (or Saturday A.M. for
early risers) and camp near Dane Spring Cabin on Friday night. On
Saturday morning we will drive to the Barbershop Trail trailhead to
start the hike, and return to our car campsite Saturday night. Sunday
we will return to the starting trailhead using the U-Bar and Houston
Brothers
Trails.

With
the exception of transportation to Minnesota, cost in
minimal. May
weather is optimal; highs in the 70’s, lows in the 40’s and no
mosquitoes. This trip is an once-in-a-lifetime experience. The famous
Boundary Waters Canoe Area is the ultimate wilderness adventure
experience. Located in Northeastern Minnesota, the Boundary Waters
Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) has over a million acres of wilderness,
with over 1,000 pristine lakes and streams, and over 1500 miles of
canoe routes. The BWCA is a true wilderness experience,
without
motors, no electricity, no telephone lines, and no roads to the inner
lakes. Transportation is by canoe only. Paddling through this same vast
wilderness first inhabited by the Indians, then the Voyageurs, and
finally the mineral prospectors and loggers, one senses a bonding with
the past. Because there are literally hundreds of routes joined
together only by waterways and portages, paddlers searching for
wilderness adventure travel can canoe those same routes used by the
early people that populated this rugged wilderness.
