Plastic soda or water bottles make great inexpensive water bottles. A 2-liter bottle fits nicely into the side pocket of most backpacks.
Cooking over a fire
If you like to cook over an open fire, there is nothing like a small rubber hose to encourage reluctant wood, or coax a small ember to life. Start with a 3" piece of 3/8" aluminum or copper tubing. Slip an 18" piece of rubber tubing over the metal and you are ready for action. No more bending over with your face next to the fire trying to blow at just the right spot. One caution! Don't breathe in through the hose.

Our loop will desend using the Icehouse Canyon #198 and Telephone #192 Trails, and return via the Six-shooter Canyon Trail #197, passing beautiful Ferndell Spring. This terrific loop hike will take us into and through the tall pines, aspens and fern glens of the Mogollon Rim area. This hike follows the original trails constructed by both the forest service and local pioneer ranchers in this area. These trails linked the network of cabins used by the original forest rangers in the early 1900s, and include the Barbershop, U Bar and Houston Brothers Trails. We will depart the Valley sometime late on Friday (or Saturday A.M. for early risers) and camp near Dane Spring Cabin on Friday night. On Saturday morning we will drive to the Barbershop Trail trailhead to start the hike, and return to our car campsite Saturday night. Sunday we will return to the starting trailhead using the U-Bar and Houston Brothers Trails.

With the exception of transportation to Minnesota, cost in minimal. May weather is optimal; highs in the 70’s, lows in the 40’s and no mosquitoes. This trip is an once-in-a-lifetime experience. The famous Boundary Waters Canoe Area is the ultimate wilderness adventure experience. Located in Northeastern Minnesota, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) has over a million acres of wilderness, with over 1,000 pristine lakes and streams, and over 1500 miles of canoe routes. The BWCA is a true wilderness experience, without motors, no electricity, no telephone lines, and no roads to the inner lakes. Transportation is by canoe only. Paddling through this same vast wilderness first inhabited by the Indians, then the Voyageurs, and finally the mineral prospectors and loggers, one senses a bonding with the past. Because there are literally hundreds of routes joined together only by waterways and portages, paddlers searching for wilderness adventure travel can canoe those same routes used by the early people that populated this rugged wilderness.
