This
beautiful canyon sports soaring walls and solitude like you couldn’t
imagine in Sedona. This overnight trip will take us through the
seldom-visited reaches of Upper Woods Canyon, exiting at the more
well-known lower reaches in Oak Creek Village. In the upper
section we will encounter no trail and pools that may need to be swum
in order to continue down-canyon. The canyon will vary from river
rock cobbles to stretches of red bedrock, followed by more cobbles and
then, finally, a trail. We will also visit some native ruins
along the way. A good beginner canyoneering trip.

will begin our hike up the Vault Mine Trail, a steep climb for 1.5
miles. After this initial steep climb, the rest is relatively easy,
traversing the Agua Caliente Trail for 2.2 miles to Josephine Saddle, a
great place to stop for a lunch break and view the memorial to the Boy
Scouts who lost their lives on Mt. Wrightson in 1958. We will then
continue on Old Baldy Trail for 2.5 miles to conclude our
hike. Faster hikers, desiring a little more distance, can return
from Josephine Saddle via the Super Trail, adding another 1.2 miles to
the hike. | | SANTA CRUZ SEA KAYAKING - Ventura, CA

This
trail is the easiest and most direct way to the summit of Kendrick Mt.
which is one of the tallest peaks in Arizona at 10,418 ft. It is
very well graded and offers outstanding views of the San Francisco
Peaks, the North rim of the Grand Canyon, Oak Creek and Mingus
Mountain. At a saddle, .25 miles from the summit, is a picturesque
old cabin built around 1912 which has two bunks that provides shelter
for overnight hikers. On the summit is a fire tower which is manned
from Memorial Day through Labor Day and offers spectacular views of the
surrounding area. An exploration of a local cave is a possibility
after the hike. Refreshments will be provided after the hike. | | SANDYS CANYON TRAIL #137 - Southeast of Flagstaff |

This
trail joins the Fisher Point to Marshall Lake section of the Arizona
Trail. Here is a trail just a few minutes outside Flagstaff that
offers good photo opportunities, interesting geology, great views, and
access to a longer trail that stretches all the way across
Arizona. Sandys Canyon Trail starts out by skirting the rim of
Walnut Canyon, a scenic rift in the same layers of rock that form the
upper cliffs of the Grand Canyon. From the trailhead, you get a great
view of the San Francisco Peaks with the cliffs of Walnut Canyon in the
foreground. The trail heads north following the Walnut Canyon Rim
for a short distance before it drops down Sandys Canyon into the main
gorge. Sandys Canyon Trail then continues along the Walnut Canyon
floor on an old jeep track to an intersection with the Arizona
Trail. We will be following this trail to Fisher Point and
beyond. We will turn around after 3.6 miles.

This
trail passes through stands of Oak, Juniper and a large Ponderosa pine
stand. The trail climes 1,200 ft over three miles as we climb to
the top of Spruce Mountain. If the fire lookout is manned we may
visit and enjoy the view of Granite, Mingus Mountains and the San
Francisco Peeks. The trail then runs alone Spruce Ridge for about
1.6 miles from there we take a twisting decent and cross some old
mining roads as we head back to the Groom Creek trailhead. The
trail is mostly shaded and is an easy walk. Bring water and sturdy
shoes; there are restrooms at the trailhead but no water. After
the hike, for those interested, we will stop for lunch at the Prescott
Brewing Company.

Bob and Merrily Metzger are putting together a weeklong Black River Fly Fishing & Camp in July.
Details are being put together now, but we wanted folks who need to
plan for vacation time to have plenty of notice. You can come for all
or part of it. We are going to make a base camp at Becker Lake
near Springerville and then fish Becker Lake, hike and fish the East
and West forks of the Black River with perhaps an overnight backpack,
and maybe go onto the reservation and fish the Black there. If you have
a date preferences, please email Merrily at mmetzger@radsafe.com by
March 15th. Also, send along any questions you have regarding the area
and activities.
