Plastic soda or water bottles make great inexpensive water bottles. A 2-liter bottle fits nicely into the side pocket of most backpacks.
Cooking over a fire
If you like to cook over an open fire, there is nothing like a small rubber hose to encourage reluctant wood, or coax a small ember to life. Start with a 3" piece of 3/8" aluminum or copper tubing. Slip an 18" piece of rubber tubing over the metal and you are ready for action. No more bending over with your face next to the fire trying to blow at just the right spot. One caution! Don't breathe in through the hose.

This beautiful canyon sports soaring walls and solitude like you couldn’t imagine in Sedona.  This overnight trip will take us through the seldom-visited reaches of Upper Woods Canyon, exiting at the more well-known lower reaches in Oak Creek Village.  In the upper section we will encounter no trail and pools that may need to be swum in order to continue down-canyon.  The canyon will vary from river rock cobbles to stretches of red bedrock, followed by more cobbles and then, finally, a trail.  We will also visit some native ruins along the way.  A good beginner canyoneering trip.

On the summit is a fire tower which is manned from Memorial Day through Labor Day and offers spectacular views of the surrounding area. An exploration of a local cave is a possibility after the hike.  Refreshments will be provided after the hike.

This trail joins the Fisher Point to Marshall Lake section of the Arizona Trail. Here is a trail just a few minutes outside Flagstaff that offers good photo opportunities, interesting geology, great views, and access to a longer trail that stretches all the way across Arizona. Sandys Canyon Trail starts out by skirting the rim of Walnut Canyon, a scenic rift in the same layers of rock that form the upper cliffs of the Grand Canyon. From the trailhead, you get a great view of the San Francisco Peaks with the cliffs of Walnut Canyon in the foreground. The trail heads north following the Walnut Canyon Rim for a short distance before it drops down Sandys Canyon into the main gorge. Sandys Canyon Trail then continues along the Walnut Canyon floor on an old jeep track to an intersection with the Arizona Trail. We will be following this trail to Fisher Point and beyond. We will turn around after 3.6 miles.
