Plastic soda or water bottles make great inexpensive water bottles. A 2-liter bottle fits nicely into the side pocket of most backpacks.
Cooking over a fire
If you like to cook over an open fire, there is nothing like a small rubber hose to encourage reluctant wood, or coax a small ember to life. Start with a 3" piece of 3/8" aluminum or copper tubing. Slip an 18" piece of rubber tubing over the metal and you are ready for action. No more bending over with your face next to the fire trying to blow at just the right spot. One caution! Don't breathe in through the hose.

Here is a chance to have a great, fun weekend and give back to the environment!
Fossil Creek is a beautiful riparian area northwest of Payson. There are lots of old growth sycamore trees and a perennial stream with great swimming holes. It’s a great place to visit but is a little "over loved" by visitors. We will backpack in to Fossil Springs, spend a few hours Saturday afternoon picking up trash and generally cleaning up the place. We will have plenty of time to explore the incredible canyon before enjoying the evening's campfire festivities. We’ll be joined by other hiking clubs and hikers, so this will be a big and lively group. Come represent our club!
This will be an Easy + backpack; it's not a long hike but you do have to hike out of the canyon. We'll need to double bag the trash we pick up and haul it out, but our packs should be light after we eat all our food and drink the margaritas! Be sure to bring gloves!
Friday - Head up after work and car camp at the Pine trailhead. Dinner and drinks at the Rimside Grill.
Saturday morning - Drive to the Fossil Springs TH, hike in, and set-up camp alongside the creek.
Saturday afternoon - Pick up trash (bag donations are welcome).
Saturday evening - Dinner and socializing with the other clubs/hikers participating.
Sunday - Hike out and head home.

Updates:

The prehistoric Puebloan Indian ruins on Cedar Mesa Plateau are fascinating and provide great opportunity for thoughtful adventure. They were built hundreds of years ago by hardy native people who have come to be called the Anasazi. Expert stonemasons, they built homes on cliff faces and in alcoves throughout the Four Corners area. They also created intricate pottery and detailed rock art. Ruins and relics from the Anasazi culture survive in many areas. Some sites are close to roads and can be visited with little effort. Some of the most interesting sites are far from roads and can only be seen by those willing to backpack into the wilderness. This is where you are headed. We will drive
up to southern Utah on the 22nd, camping at Goosenecks State Park for the evening. We will start our adventure on the morning of the 23rd, backpacking for 1 or 2 nights in the surrounding canyons while on our explorations. If we are satisfied with 1 night we can add 1 or more day hikes to see some additional spectacular ruins on Sunday. Depending on the consensus we can head back Sunday after we are through or potentially overnight part-way home, arriving Monday early.

Who knows what ghastly and macabre surprises may await us within the deep, dark bowels of Haunted Canyon? How many poor souls have made a one-way trip into this canyon, never to be seen again? For those of you with the courage to explore this area, come on out and find out why it’s called ‘Haunted Canyon”. We will also visit the historic Toney Ranch house. Early Superstition Mountain pioneer, William Toney, built this original log cabin (later known as Tony Ranch House) on 78 acres of homesteaded land in the summer of 1913. Come check it out!

Come out to a great car camp and hike at Kendrick Peak! For all of you that have hiked Kendrick Peak Hike before I do not need to tell you what a great hike this is and the beautiful views from the top. Kendrick Mountain is one of the larger volcanoes in the San Francisco Peaks Volcanic Field, reaching a height of 10, 418 feet. Driving north from Flagstaff on 180, Kendrick is the predominant mountain on the left, or west, side of the highway. The telltale sign of a volcano, the two peaks, characterizes it. I also plan a trip to the lava tubes/ice caves after the hike, and was thinking about hiding some beer in the cave to help encourage people to go. As some will already be up there camping and
some will be driving up that morning we will meet at the Kendrick trailhead at 9:45AM.

The trail descends gradually eastward, transversing several beautiful aspen lined meadows. We will continue on the Old Baldy Trail to Baldy Saddle, another 1.8 miles and 1650' in elevation. From there we will be taking the Crest Trail to the summit of Mt.
