Plastic soda or water bottles make great inexpensive water bottles. A 2-liter bottle fits nicely into the side pocket of most backpacks.
Cooking over a fire
If you like to cook over an open fire, there is nothing like a small rubber hose to encourage reluctant wood, or coax a small ember to life. Start with a 3" piece of 3/8" aluminum or copper tubing. Slip an 18" piece of rubber tubing over the metal and you are ready for action. No more bending over with your face next to the fire trying to blow at just the right spot. One caution! Don't breathe in through the hose.

Here is a trail just a few minutes outside Flagstaff that offers good photo opportunities, interesting geology, great views, and access to a longer trail that stretches all the way across Arizona. Sandys Canyon Trail starts out by skirting the rim of Walnut Canyon, a scenic rift in the same layers of rock that form the upper cliffs of the Grand Canyon. From the trailhead, you get a great view of the San Francisco Peaks with the cliffs of Walnut Canyon in the foreground. The trail heads north from the trailhead following the Walnut Canyon Rim for a short distance before it drops down Sandys Canyon into the main gorge. Sandys Canyon Trail then continues along the Walnut Canyon floor on an old jeep track to an intersection with the Arizona Trail. We will be following this trail to Fisher Point and beyond. We will turn around after 3.5 miles or so and head back the way we came.

Updates:

For those who think golf is a good walk spoiled, this is for you. The 14th annual Crown King Open Golf tournament is "Cowboy Golf" at its best. Its only hole is 2 miles long, and its fairway is the historic mining road that runs down from Towers Mountain. Golfing ability is not required, only one trusty, err, rusty club. Refreshments are served along the way, along with a barbeque and party afterwards. The $40 entry fee benefits the local Crown King Fire Department. Tee Time is at 7:30 Saturday morning, so for those interested, there will be an optional car camp on Friday night. The October 2003 Arizona Highways called this a wacky adventure that's a real hoot.
