Plastic soda or water bottles make great inexpensive water bottles. A 2-liter bottle fits nicely into the side pocket of most backpacks.
Cooking over a fire
If you like to cook over an open fire, there is nothing like a small rubber hose to encourage reluctant wood, or coax a small ember to life. Start with a 3" piece of 3/8" aluminum or copper tubing. Slip an 18" piece of rubber tubing over the metal and you are ready for action. No more bending over with your face next to the fire trying to blow at just the right spot. One caution! Don't breathe in through the hose.

Mt. Elden is to Flagstaff what Camelback is to Phoenix. It dominates the city skyline and flanks its larger brethren, the San Francisco Peaks. We will climb Mt. Elden Trail up winding switchbacks and steep straights, through ponderosa pines and boulder-ridden ridges. Once on top, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the entire area from the elevated deck of a lookout tower and listen to the ranger's stories about the Radio Fire that ripped through these hills in 1977. Pump up that heart rate on this steep but manageable trail, and wind down via a detour along the Fatman's Loop. Afterwards, there’s the Made In The Shade Beer Festival at the fairgrounds.  Tickets at the door at $40. You can purchase tickets online at http://www.azbeer.com/Flagstaff.htm. Mileage from Phoenix is approximately 240 miles.

The popular Kendrick Trail #22 is ~ eight miles roundtrip and gorgeous.  We will climb the sunny southern slopes of the mountain. A lookout cabin, equipped with a wood stove and three bare bunk beds, stands on the ridge a quarter mile below the summit which has withstood the elements since 1912. From the tower, we will see the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, as well as Red Mountain, Mt Humphreys and Sycamore Canyon. Bring rain gear! This is the time of year that we will likely experience some rain and/or a good old fashioned thunder/lightning storm. Bring a snack and plenty of water. We plan on stopping after the hike at The Beaver Street Brewery.

WEST FORK OF OAK CREEK CANYONEERING - Sedona

Note: In order to participate in this adventure please RSVP by August 4th
Updates:

We plan to camp on Friday night near the head of the west Fork of Oak Creek in order to get an early start on this adventure.  What we will be doing is the descent of the entire length of the West Fork of Oak Creek.  The upper reaches of WFOC take us through beautiful, wild country, seldom seen by man.  Though non-technical, this descent traverses rugged canyon bottom with a number of swims and innumerable wades before joining with the more-traveled lower reaches of WFOC.  Although just 12 miles, this is a rigorous hike/swim.  Suggested gear includes waterproofing your gear (use of a trash compactor bag within your usual day-pack works just fine), fleece and lots of sustenance. Plan on this hike taking about 8 hours of hiking time in addition to the long after-hike shuttle.  Due to the expected late afternoon finish, it is strongly recommended that participants plan to camp again on Saturday night.  NOTE:  If there is confirmed interest, we could also run a concurrent hike starting at the customary West Fork trailhead and hiking upstream a-ways and returning – this would be an “easy” option of about 8 miles and would be ‘participant-led’.
MT GRAHAM CAMP AND HIKE - Safford

Updates:

Come escape the desert heat atop one of the most beautiful mountains in Arizona.  Mt. Graham reaches heights over 10,000 feet and hosts a lush forest for us to explore. We will camp Friday night in the cool mountain air and hike the Ash Creek Trail downward on Saturday. Ash Creek Trail runs along a verdant spring-fed oasis complete with flowery meadows, wild raspberries, ample ferns & mushrooms, trickling stream, and even some poison ivy (bring long pants). The trail descends a ridiculously steep grade and we must climb back up the same route, but the scenery more than compensates for the effort.
(*Go down the trail as far as you'd like, and return the same way. The lower half of the trail requires some route-finding skills). After the hike, we will cookout and camp out on Saturday before returning to the Valley. Mileage from Phoenix is approximately 320 miles.

Updates:

The cold hearted orb that rules the night, will remove the colors from our sight. Red is gray and yellow white, but we decide which trail is right, and which is an illusion. From the Beverly Canyon Trailhead, we will loop through the isolated valleys of the South Mountain Park/Preserve, the largest municipal park in the country, at 16,500 acres and 14 miles across. Afterwards, for those interested, we will enjoy refreshments and a swim nearby at Lucky’s cement pond (BYOB).

Note: Be sure to bring a good flashlight or headlight, and plenty of water.

Updates:

The Grand Canyon’s North Rim has far better scenery at the top than the South Rim. It is 1000 foot higher in elevation, enough so that the typical vegetation is fir, spruce and aspen. It offers excellent views of the large volcanic mountains to the south -- the San Francisco Peaks, Sitgreaves, Kendrick, etc. The North Rim offers better hiking on the Rim, and Roaring Springs is a good destination hike on the North Kaibab Trail itself. There are other wonderful hikes from the North Rim area as well. Come and check it out!

Horton Creek Trail is the perfect beginners backpack, not too long, not too steep. Join us for a walk along the creek and enjoy the landscape that inspired Zane Grey. The route begins at the bridge and follows an old jeep trial through pine forest. Soon you hear the rustling of the creek and just want to put your feet in…but don’t. Another three miles through a few switchbacks and we meet our destination, Horton Springs. Now you can take your shoes off…jump in, if you wish. There are several nice camp spaces close by.  Hopefully, there will not be fire restrictionsWe will plan accordingly, so watch for updates. Mileage from Phoenix is approximately 200 miles.

For those who think golf is a good walk spoiled, this is for you. The 15th annual Crown King Open Golf tournament is “Cowboy Golf” at its best. Its only hole is 2 miles long, and its fairway is the historic mining road that runs down from Towers Mountain. Golfing ability is not required, only one trusty, er, rusty club. Refreshments are served along the way, along with a barbeque and party afterwards. The $40 entry fee benefits the local Crown King Fire Department. Tee Time is at 7:30 Saturday morning, so for those interested, there will be an optional car camp on Friday night. Registration is limited, so please RSVP the hike leader by Sept. 1. The October 2003 Arizona Highways called this a wacky adventure that’s a real hoot. YeHaa!

If you attended the world-renowned Crown King Golf Classic on Saturday (see above), this hike is on your way home; if you cannot make the Golf Outing you are still welcome to drive up Saturday and camp with us or Sunday morning for just the hike. Please RSVP to Kurt or Randy by Thursday September 20th.
Poland Creek runs through a deep canyon on the eastern flanks of the Bradshaw Mountains. We will be taking the Algonquin Trail down to Poland Creek where we will find many pools suitable for swimming, including the Big Dipper, below a 30 foot waterfall!  The waterfall tumbles over sheer granite cliffs into a wide circular pool at the bottom, while tufts of grass and willow trees line its edges. Surrounded by a ring of cliffs and guarded by an upstream gauntlet of water and rock, the Big Dipper isn’t easily accessible.  Reaching it requires a steep hike down Algonquin Trail 225 and some canyoneering along Poland Creek. However, finding a way to reach the large scenic pool is definitely worth the effort. Bring plenty of water and snacks. Bring an extra pair of socks for the hike out.
