We will depart Friday and head down to Wilcox, then out to the camp site. For those who can't get Friday off, Wilcox is fairly close with motels. Nestled half-way between the popular Santa Catalinas and the towering Pinalenos Mountains lie a seldom-visited gem; the Galiuro Mountains. The 5 1/2 hour drive from Phoenix is worth the effort, since the remote area has such a variety of scenery and views. Starting at the end of FR 660, the trail heads up the North Fork of Ash Creek. This heavily wooded area is fairly level for the first 2.5 miles. At the midway point there is an isolated Riparian Area with a beautiful stand of aspen fed by Upper Ash Springs. Here we will bear right across Ash Creek and follow the trail up the north side of the canyon up into the high desert. After about 4 miles, the trail reaches the ridgeline of the Galiuros. We will then head south along the East Divide Trail. After about a mile the trail will start to switchback on the north face of Bassett Peak. After the hike we'll return to camp to recover with a cold one and some food. We will head home on Sunday.
